On December 03rd,2022, YWCA Rwanda in partnership with CRS under the USAID/Gikuriro Kuri Bose Program, joined the rest of the World to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) in KAYONZA and NGOMA districts in the Eastern Province under the theme “Innovation for inclusive development”.
The theme marks the start to mobilize the Government, Stakeholders/Partners, and community members at large, to support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities.
The core message during the celebration was to encourage communities of Persons with Disabilities to show up their potentials since disability differs from inabilities particularly to actively participate in all socio-economic and political spheres. Other community members were encouraged to support in shaping an inclusive environment that uncovers abilities of persons with disabilities.
USAID/Gikuriro Kuri Bose Program supported people with physical impairment with 69 elbow crutches, 11 accessible toilets and 20 mattresses to poor families of persons with disabilities in both KAYONZA and NGOMA districts.
HARERIMANA Jean Damascene, the vice Mayor in Charge of Social Affairs of KAYONZA district in his speech insisted on sensitizing the entire community to make all services accessible for persons with disabilities and encouraged local leaders and the community at large to continue to advocacy for the rights and accessible services for people with disabilities.
Prior to the celebration of IDPD, USAID/Gikuriro Kuri Bose Program mobilized a multi-disciplinary team to conduct individual needs assessment where 305 Persons with disabilities in KAYONZA and NGOMA were assessed for tailored referral and linkage services.
